Ninety-Nine

ninety-nine

Ninety-Nine can be a great game to have some fun drinking. However, it does require some thinking because you have to add the card values together and use some strategy to play. Some people may think it is too difficult, but for most people, it just adds to the drunkenness and fun.

What You Need

For Ninety-Nine all you need is a deck of cards, some friends and some drinks. Players should be told the basic values for the cards, too.

The card values are as follows:

  • 10s, Jacks, Queens are worth 10 points
  • Aces can be 1 or 11
  • Kings take the total to 99
  • Nines and Jokers are worth nothing
  • Fours are worth 4 points, and reverses direction of play
  • Threes are worth 3 points, and skip the next player
  • All other cards are their face value

Players are each dealt out 4 cards. The remaining cards are placed in a draw pile and one card is flipped face up on the discard pile. Players take turns laying cards on the discard pile face up. Every time a player plays a card, they draw another card from the draw pile (but if they forget, they play with one short the remainder of the round). The game is played much like Uno where players have to use strategy to win.

The Object Of The Game

The object of the drinking game Ninety-Nine is to have the total of the discard pile stay at 99 or under. Players must lay cards to keep the pile from going over a total of 99. If a player can't stay under 99 then they lose.

Drinking Rules

The basic drinking rules for Ninety-Nine involve sticking to the main object of the game. If a player can't lay a card without making the total go over 99 then they lose and must drink. If a king is played it brings the total to 99 and the next player who can't make a play (can't remain at 99 or lower) has to chug their drink. That also means the round is over and the game starts over.

In addition, there are other drinking rules built into the game play. If a player lays the same card as the player before them then the previous player must drink. When a four is played and reverses the game, the person who got reversed on must drink. When a three is played, the player that got skipped must also drink. A joker means everyone drinks.

Variations

In some Ninety-Nine games values for the cards may differ. For example, some play with tens being either face value or subtracting ten from the total of the discard deck, nines bring the total to 99 and kings being zero. In some cases, jokers have the power to bring the deck to a total of 99.

Card values can really be set to whatever the group of players prefer. The game can be adjusted to add more cards that can subtract from the deck to make the game longer. Additional drinking rules may also be added to the game to make it more lively.
