Drinking Game "21"

So you wanna play a drinking game, but got no dice, cards, quarters, or any ping pong balls? It's all good. "21" needs none of the above... so it's THE game for you! It's a college party 'word game'... no extras necessary.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • At least 3 people to start
  • A table to sit around
  • Beers for everybody

BASIC RULES

The point of the game is to go in sequence, calling out "1" to "21". The game begins when the person elected to start says, "1 to my left" (or right). Then the next individual in the chosen direction says "2", then the next says "3", and so on, until you reach 21. Simple so far, right?

Here's the kicker! Each player has the option of saying more than one number in the sequence, and depending on how many numbers they call out, it changes the pace like thus...

  • If only one number is called out, the sequence stays in the same direction.
  • If two consecutive numbers are called out, the sequence goes in the reverse direction.
  • If three consecutive numbers are called out, the sequence stays in the same direction but the next person is skipped.

So for example, if a person starts the game with "1", and the next person says "2,3", then it's right back on the person who started the game. Then it continues in that opposite direction until it's reversed again.

PUNISHMENTS

The individual who's forced to say "21" at the end of each round has to finish their drink.

If you say a number out of turn or out of sequence, you have to drink. (Then you restart the game again with "1 to my left/right".)

If you take too long to respond (more than 3 seconds) or mess up, then you also have to drink.

(optional) If someone calls out a sequence of numbers that add up to exactly 21, then they have to drink. For example, if someone says "10,11" or "6,7,8".

A FEW POINTERS

Here's one basic tip to always rememeber... never stop on "18"! Because the next person can just say "19,20" and it'll be right back on you, then you'll be stuck on "21" and you'll have to chug the rest of your drink.

This is a game you have to pay attention to if you don't wanna get totally wasted within the hour! But then again, that's also the fun of the game... because the more you drink, the harder it gets to concentrate.

If you're the starter, you can mess up the other players right off the bat by starting with multiple numbers. If you say "1,2, to my right", then the person to your LEFT has to say "3". But they never catch that the first time. Devil Smiley Especially, if you look at the person to your RIGHT instead (as if it was their turn). This will most likely screw up both people on both sides of you, and they both have to drink!

ADDITIONAL RULES

After you play a few rounds and you think you got the game down, you can start implementing the other basic rule to this game... which is, the person who ends the game with 21 can implement a new rule before they start the next round. Or if they wish, they can also negate a previous rule instead.

Popular rules to implement:

  • Changing a number or a group of numbers (ie - multiples of five) to something else. For example, changing the number "5" to the word "asshole"... then all the players have to say that in their sequence instead (1,2,3,4,asshole,6,etc...).

If you wanna get even trickier, you can use phrases or other numbers (even 21, if you wanna be really evil) to replace some of the numbers.
For example - you can say "'3' is now 'I'm gay'", or "'7' is now '9'" (which would go ...5,6,9,8,9,10,...), or swap "3" and "4" so the order would be 1,2,4,3,5..., etc.

Or you can replace a number with an action. Such as "13" is now a crotch grab and a Michael Jackson scream.

  • Making certain words, gestures, or actions illegal. i.e. - You can't say "drink" (otherwise you yourself have to drink), or you can't point, or you can't drink with your dominant hand (have to drink lefty, if you're right handed), etc.

  • Designating the loser of each round (the person who gets "21") as the 'thumb-master' or 'face-master' (or it can be anything else you think of) for the next round. If they're the thumb-master for example... at any time, they can put their thumb on the edge of the table and the last person to notice (to put their own thumb also on the table) is penalized. Likewise, the last person to copy the face that the 'face-master' makes also gets penalized (usually a drink).

  • Designating someone (usually themselves) as the question master. Then throughout the game, if they ask a question from anybody at anytime, the responder always has to answer with "fuck off". If the responder actually answers the question with a real answer, they have to drink. For example, if the question master asked "what's your name again?" and you answered with your name, instead of "fuck off", then you'd be penalized. Even if they asked "what time is it?" or "who's turn is it?" or "who's beer is that?", etc, the answer always has to be "fuck off", otherwise you drink.

VARIATION OF THE GAME

Another fun variation of this game (once you know how to play), is to use roman numerals in place of numbers. i.e. - I, V, and X values for all the numbers 1-21.

This is a little bit more difficult, and takes more concentration, but it gets funny as hell when you start replacing the roman numeral values with phrases. Like "I" being "No!", "V" being "Daddy!", and "X" being "Don't touch me there!" So when you have to say 17 (XVII), it's "Don't touch me there, daddy! No! Noooooo!"

This variation of 21 is generally louder, because you have to yell the phrases. Which is fine, 'cause it's funnier, but just be wary of the neighbors calling child services or something.
