Cabaret Party

cabaret party

Looking for something a bit different for a college party? Take a cue from the Broadway musical "Cabaret" for an inviting, somewhat bawdy good time. The Cabaret party is filled with cabaret girls and boys, entertainers in sexy costumes and music to chase away the dark thoughts of this time in world history. The Nazi party was coming of age so the stage is set for drama in 1931 Berlin in a seedy nightclub. We are taken on a journey through many people's lives and as this party unfolds you can immerse yourself in the bigger than life characters.

Dress The Part

Costuming for this Cabaret party should take on one of the characters from the musical of course. If you are going to be one of the entertainers such as Sally Bowles you should choose a black satin vest or corset with short hot pants and fishnet stockings. Heavy rouge cheeks and lips, long black eyelashes and eyeliner topped with a bowler hat will complete Sally's look. She needs to look hot to draw in her audience, so let your personality take on hers for the party. The Emcee is pale faced with heavily rouged cheeks, and he wears black as well. An old fashioned black tuxedo would work well for his wardrobe or you could get a pair of black pants, suspenders and white shirt to complete his look. Of course, you could always come as one of the audience so anything that is reminiscent of 1930s Europe would work as well.

Set The Mood

Setting the stage for this party should include a "stage". Get your hands on some cheap red material for the curtains and backdrop, but the rest of the stage should be done in black. Find an old fashioned microphone and place a single bistro style chair on the stage for your performers. A single spotlight shining on the stage would be great, or if you can get a copy of Cabaret to show on the backdrop of the stage it will really set the mood, but leave the sound off. The rest of the room should hold some small intimate tables with black or red tablecloths and small battery operated candles or lights. You don't want a lot of light! If you could find a fog machine set it on the lowest setting to give the room a smoky atmosphere. You should encourage your guests to perform on the stage. A karaoke machine could work or you could play the soundtrack from Cabaret to continue the mood of the party.

German Party Food

You couldn't have a Cabaret party without a large variety of German beers. The Germans mix their beer with lemonade and colas so you should have some of each on hand for those wanting to try something authentic. The food is simple: sausages, cheeses, bread rolls, tangy brown mustard and for dessert a Black Forest Cake or jelly doughnuts if you are on a budget.

This party is one of my favorites and everyone always has a great time. Don't forget to have a camera on hand as you will want to capture the entire party on film.
