It's probably safe to say that beer pong is not just one of the most popular college drinking games, but the most popular beer drinking game period! Its' popularity has blown up exponentially through the years on college campuses across the globe, especially in recent years!
***below-paragraph-1.shtml***First, find a lengthy table to play on - A folding table, dining table, or even an actual ping pong table (which this game derived from), whatever you got! Pretty much anything of adequate size will do.
If you're gonna be a frequenter of this game or planning to throw parties regularly, you might wanna consider getting an authentic beer pong table or even building your own personalized beer pong table.
If you wanna build your own custom table - First cut out a plywood board to size, anywhere from 7-10 ft long and 2-4 ft wide (the supposed 'regulation' size is 8' x 2', but anything around that vicinity is fine). Next, paint the table with a custom graphic/design, with a sports theme, school theme, fraternity/sorority symbols, etc. Then finish it off with a liquid spill-proof coating.
A worthy idea would be to paint your table as a replica of your school's basketball court or football field (like the example above). You can trick it out as detailed as you want it, but the closer it is to the real thing, the better!
Table setup - Be sure to setup your game table in an area where you're not gonna mind having some beer spills, and where it's relatively easy to clean up afterwords (like in the garage or on a wooden floor surface... no carpets!).
Next, setup the game cups -
10 cups on each side is usually the norm, but you can also use 6 cups on each side for a quicker game (which is useful if there's a long waiting list).
Place the cups in the shape of an equilateral triangle, with the most cups at the bottom and 1 cup up top.
(Kinda like the diagram to the right, except that this is more for mass team play!
)
Fill up all the cups with equal amounts of beer - The amount varies from house game to house game, but they're generally filled to about 1/3 or 1/4 full. Which should be around 3 finger widths high.
Lastly, set a rinse cup filled with water for each team - The rinse cup will be used to rinse the ping pong balls in between turns (when the ball gets dirty, drops on the floor, etc). Be sure to put the rinse cups to the side, so it's not in the way of gameplay.
There are a lot of discrepancies in beer pong rules, depending on country, region and house rules, so there aren't that many universal rules to abide by. But generally... this game is played by a team of 2 players on each side who take turns shooting the ping pong balls across the table, in an effort to make them into the opposing teams' cups.
Whenever a ball is made into the cup, the opposing team has to drink that cup of beer then remove it from game play. Each player on a team gets to shoot only once before the turn goes to the other team, unless both players make their balls in the same turn, then they generally get another turn. And whoever eliminates all the opposing team's cups first wins!
That's pretty much the basics of the game!
From there on starts the many differing variations to this game... For example - in one version of beer pong, whenever a ball is made in an opposing team's cup, the opposing team must drink it right away or incur a penalty (which could be having to drink more beer or losing the game altogether)... and in another version, when that ball is made, the opposing team has to wait until both players finish, because if the 2nd player makes their ball in the same cup, then that opposing team now has to drink 3 cups (the made cup and 2 other random cups), or 4 cups... depending on another variation to the game where the opposing team has to drink 4 cups if the 2nd player makes the same cup as the first player or 3 cups if that 2nd player makes a different cup. And there are also those who still play with no bonus cup having to be drunk at all when both players make a cup (so in those games only 2 cups total would have to be drunk by the opposing team). =P
Whew! See how this can get really confusing? It's crazy!
It's like that for pretty much all aspects of the game... a bunch of little variations to the rules! From the bonuses, to the penalties, to situational rewards, amounts of beer to use, shooting distance, bounce shots, blocking shots, flicking/blowing, rollbacks, re-racking, rebuttals/redemption, and so on and so on... there are way too many rules and discrepancies (depending on where you are and house rules) to be able to list them all.
But the great thing is, pretty much everybody in college beyond freshmen year already knows the game quite well! So you can learn the local nuances of the beer pong game from your local party reps. The rest will be by house rules.
